kitchen And Health
Disclaimer -
This chapter is just to clear out the "jaalaas" (webs) in the mind of majority of people that they can not blame every disease in their body on their hereditary pattern and get away with shrugging off their shoulders without taking the responsibility of their own wellness and finding the mistakes which they are committing knowingly or unknowingly.
Kitchen and health are close knit subjects. It may sound awkward but it is the eternal truth. " Best bodies are made in kitchen."
These days it's common for majority of people to say-
" I have stomach ulcer( peptic ulcer) because it runs in our family. My mom, my naani , my aunt etc. Also went through this."
" I have dental problems because it is hereditary - mere dad, mere brother ko...sabko hai Ghar main yeh daanto ki problem."
People facing thyroid imbalance even in early twenties say it so casually that everyone in our family is having this thyroid issue.
By uttering these statements they just accept that it is something they are entitled to come across and they are just helpless to control it because it is HEREDITARY, without even thinking that have they ever even tried to tackle these issues...??
Thyroid imbalance, peptic ulcer, dental woes( the list can be infinitely long) are majorly lifestyle diseases. The hereditary factor is quite low indeed. The core factor is the LIFESTYLE.
Then why these lifestyle diseases are labelled as hereditary diseases????
Let's crack this mystery....
As we all know our diet comes from kitchen. If the stuff lying in kitchen is wrong or unhealthy, or the lady of the house ( even the educated ones) may not be aware of the actual healthy food and food habits....then no amount of medicine can whip the bad health out of the whole family . As the whole family is eating same food which is thought to be healthy in their perspective, the repercussion of the lack of knowledge of real food science will jolt the whole family sooner or later in terms of same disease ( eg. Diabetes, Hypertension, Hypothyroidism etc.) and hence the terminology HEREDITARY emerges.
With the simple and correct diet , disciplined food habits ,even the hereditary diseases can be managed to a great extent.
There is no dearth of knowledge around food and health ( internet, books, webinars, seminars) these days. Just pull up your socks to learn it right and put it in action.
The details of Do' s and Don'ts regarding kitchen rules and food has been discussed in detail in the chapter " Ahaar Gyan".
A small summary is enlisted below....
*Replace the plain flour with Multigrain atta( low glycemic index)
*Replace white sugar( dead calories) with jaggery / shakkar
*Replace white rice with hand pounded brown rice( more fibre and more vitamin B 12)
*Replace haldiram namkeen and evening unhealthy snacks with roasted makhaanas, cheela, poha, cheese slice, sprout chaat
* Replace tea , coffee with home made herbal tea( elaichi, mulethi, saunf, ginger, mint and Tulsi leaves boiled in water with little jaggery)
*Replace colas and soft drinks with traditional nimbu paani and roohafza
* Avoid eating while watching tv
*Sit cross legged while eating ( the ancient Indian way)
These are few fundamental tips which can change the whole scenario around health. Just change your kitchen ingredients and the food discipline of whole house and not only for the one family member who is suffering from a particular disease. Otherwise also we Indians do everything at a family level then why health should be made an individual matter. Make it a family matter.
Remember:
"If your diet is right, medicine is of no need.
If your diet is wrong, medicine is of no use."
# change your kitchen # change your health status!!!!
